LT JG Taarak
USS Guardian
Bridge - flight control
Lieutenant JG Taarak turned his green bald head towards Captain Marek's ready room just in time to see Talbert enter.
The chief flight control officer smiled. Good to see him moving around again. It wasn't the same without him.
Taarak, all 6-foot, 5-inches of him, looked back ahead at the view screen in front of him as he tapped lightly on the flight console.
This is what he had been wanting to do since earning his position aboard the Guardian. After years of test piloting at Utopia Planitia Yards and the last year with a captain he didn't get along with, it was nice to be back piloting a large vessel.
The Orion man looked briefly around the bridge of the Guardian, noticing all the flickering consoles and crew members working them.
"I'm gonna love this assignment," Taarak smile and went back to work monitoring the movement of the Guardian. _________________

(OOC:sorry so long a wait for reply, my computer has been infected, and now I can't get IE or Firefox to work right... just the cherry on the top of a really f***ed up week)
Pulling herself out of her own thoughts she looks at the Captain.
"Yes... my thoughts on the matter" she says and takes a deep breath. "I feel that while this does sound like a reasonable solution, I am not sure if I feel comfortable with the situation of Lenara having so much power, so soon into her arival onboard this ship. I have yet to work with Lenara and do not know if I could entrust her with control over the ship. We are talking about so many lives Sir, that I am not able to give my approval on this situation without knowing Lenara was unable to do harm to the ship or it's crew." she paused a moment and looked to Mehv.
"Would we be able to test this within a holodeck?" she asked and then after a seconds worth of pause "Though that wouldn't test properly as Lenara would know it was a simulation. "
Looking between the Captain, Mehv and Talbert she sighs. "I presume this is the only feasable option?" _________________

Marek follows the Lt. as she speaks, but giving no visual reaction. He looks at Kuplo, but still doesn't speak.
OOC I'll let Mehv answer that one. _________________

Talbert smiled to himself. Obviously, the lieutenant was thinking, which was exactly what the ship needed. He was up to speed now and was unsure of Lenara himself. It was his suggestion to give the artificial lifeform limited authority in the first place, a suggestion fully endorsed and acted upon by the captain, and he also felt unclear as to the ramifications. Still, she/it had not done anything to indicate that there would be a problem.
He looked at Mehv, just before he responded, and added "What about the testing she has taken? Any indication that her synapsis could handle the load we're talking about here?" Whatever the second officer said, Talbert was sure that Marek would make the best decision in a bad situation. _________________

USS Guardian - Captain's Ready Room
Lt Mehvra-Kuplo
Nodding as VanQuax and Talbert asked their questions, he was liking where the conversation was going. This is exactly the debate he'd been having and the questions were valid.
"As you can imagine, Lenara tests were perfect. I did analyze the reaction times she had and it is possible she can handle the task. I hedge on my response a little because the information being presented in the test requires a significantly different decision pathway. Lenara has indicated a high success rate of 93%."
"To answer Lt VanQuax, the other option is to have the ops officer handle the adjustments. In simulations, this would only allow the shield to remain effective for an average of 4-5 hits with the Tetryon weapon. The real question is do we risk allowing Lenara the ability to significantly hinder us during a battle for the significant defensive improvement it would provide if she behaves as expected, or do we go the known route of having the Tetryon shield work in an manner in which we know the outcome for sure, but protect us less effectively."
After a breath, "I tried to state that simply, but there doesn't seem to be a way to do it." _________________

Marek nods to Kuplo, then looks for a moment at each officer, "Your concerns are noted, and in most instances shared." He glances at the PADD in his hand, then looks at Kuplo, "I am going to allow Lenara to handle the adjustments, but I want a team effort to make sure she does not attempt to sabotage the ship. I believe if Lt Thomas monitors her actions along with both Lt. Kuplo and Lt VanQuax monitoring her actions as your duties allow, we will have a sufficient safety net should our trust be misplaced." He looks towards the nearby viewport, "Unfortunately, our distance from Starfleet has made it necessary to use non-conventional crew assigments in the wake of recent losses." He looks back at his officers, "Commander Talbert, I want you to over see the monitoring, make sure the coverage is sufficient to catch anything unusual." _________________

"Commander Talbert, I want you to over see the monitoring, make sure the coverage is sufficient to catch anything unusual."
Roger nodded. "Understood, sir." He turned to Kuplo and Vanquax. "Make sure your data is real-timed to my station. I want a pre-emptive keystroke pattern in place to anticipate what Lenara should do as opposed to what she is doing. If there are dangerous deviations I expect we should know." He looked back to the captain.
"For the record, I don't anticipate Lenara's involvement to be anything but successful." Looking over to Vanquax he said, "Make sure you get those Quantums up and running, we don't want get caught short if there are any surprises." _________________

after a moments hesitation she nodded and stood "Aye Sir, I will make my way down to Engineering to get the required input I need." she said and looked to the Captain. "If I may Sir" _________________

"Very well, I will implement the program myself and run it alongside the main program to raise a flag at our stations if anything unexpected should occur. It will include the ability to shutout her commands, although at her speed she may be able to complete anything attempted before we could react."
If no further conversation ensues, Mehv returns to Lenara and Lt Thomas at the station and brings them up to speed on the decision to have Lenara run the shield adjustments until the program is able to learn sufficiently. He asks that they implement those changes immediately and then returns to his desk in engineering and begins to code the monitoring program. Mehv is pleased that the Captain and staff are willing to trust Lenara, for he truly believes no issues will be encountered _________________

Marek excuses VanQuax and Kuplo and once they have left turns to Talbert. "I would like your uncensored opinion, Roger. Are we being paranoid, too trusting, or somewhere in the middle?" _________________

"Captain, you've literally seen her from the time of her activation. I've been able to interact with her, and I just don't think there's going to be a problem. Based on what Mehv's been able to analyze, she's provided, and we've seen, I just don't think she'll harm us. That said, the security measures we took and the questions being raised don't mean we've overreacted at all."
He leaned back in his chair and smiled at his commanding officer.
"In truth, it's kinda nice to have someone who can fill the gaps we might experience. I hate the idea of meeting the Tal'harton without anything more than we already have. Mehv's idea has great merit, provided Lenara can pull it off. What about you, sir? Any hesitations?" _________________

Marek looked at Talbert thoughtfully for a moment, then spoke, "I believe that Lenara has no ill intent, but recent events have made me doubt my interpretations." He paused for a moment, "It is illogical, but there none the less. I would be neglecting my duty if I did not inform you of my doubts." _________________

ACTION
As the crew continues to make preparations for the ship's excursion into the nebula, the ship continues it's journey towards the nebula. It is several more hours before the ship approaches the edge of the gaseous field.
Alpha Shift is on bridge
Marek
Talbert
VanQuax
Kuplo
Taarak (sorry if spelled wrong)
Lenara
Thomas
Lenara tapped the ops console, "Captain, approaching our entry point into the nebula."
Marek adjusted his uniform as he stood, "Lt. Taarak, bring us out of warp. Ensign Lenara, prepare the probes for launch." _________________

Ensign Lenara wrote: | "Captain, approaching our entry point into the nebula." | Upon hearing this, Mehv reconfigures his station and begins monitoring the warp core and sublight engines for issues the nebular gases might be causing. Upon first look, the adjustments that have been made are sufficiently compensating for the added spatial density.
He looks around to find Lenara busy working to get the probes ready for launch and is pleased at her performance. Her times on active duty have proven her to be a capable officer, but this was the most exciting situation yet, so he was curious how she would respond. _________________
