Lt. Taarak
USS Guardian
Bridge
The Orion nodded at Captain Marek's command. "Aye Sir."
Lt. Taarak's fingers swiftly moved over the console and a series of chirps and beeps emitted from the flight control panel as the Guardian pulled out of warp speed.
"Back at impulse sir," Taarak looked ahead at the viewscreen with the nebula in front of them. "I've never seen anything so awesome, Sir."
Taarak glanced back down at his console for monitoring as the large vessel moved into impulse speed. _________________

Talbert smiled at the Orion's comment. He remembered his first deepspace mission aboard the Lakota. It wasn't all that different then, either. Being stuck on Starbase 331 for a time reminded him of just how "awesome" space could truly be.
He looked over to Kuplo and gave him a surrupeticious nod. Time to start the monitoring program. If there was a problem here, he was sure the Guardian would have limited advanced knowledge of it, so being prepared was the key.
"All set here, captain," he said to Marek. "I'm kind of looking forward to this myself." For all his bulk, Talbert was like an eager little kid when it came to space exploration. _________________

Marek walked towards the viewscreen, "Lenara, launch the probes. Taarak, steady as she goes." He turns to Kuplo, "Monitor the operating temperature on the impulse engines, an overload would be unfortunate in this region of space." He watches as the nebula shifts on screen, the perspective changing as the ship moved.
Lenara tapped out commands on the ops console, "Probes are in position, sensors functioning within normal parameters." _________________

Mehv smiles at the Captain's request. He had just started monitoring their status. The crew seemed to be working as if they were of one mind. _________________

Talbert leaned back in his chair and looked to the Tactical station. Lt. Vanquaax was there, looking focused and searching her scan results for anomalies.
"Lieutenant V.," Talbert's voice cut through her focus. "Bring the pre-programmed Quantums online and start watching for any unusual Tetryon readings." _________________

Ensign Daniels leaned back in his chair, his console quiet, his mind bored. He put his hands behind his head and looked around. Everyone was busy. Despite his work on the translator program that helped the crew identify Lenara as a possible ally, he had received little recognition. As usual, that bruised his fragile but prodigious ego.
"Life of an intergalactic hero." he muttered to himself. "Unloved and misunderstood. Ah well, someday my genius will be recognized."
The voice that spoke quietly into his ear snapped his reverie and forced him to sit upright, both out of fright and the sudden awareness that he had once again spoken out a little louder than he should have.
"You will be properly recognized, Mr. Daniels, when you complete your calibration of the lateral transceivers. In the meantime, if you truly want to be a hero, you will close your mouth and spring into action!"
"YESSIR." stammered Daniels. Talbert leaned back, standing to his full height behind the communications officer.
"This ship does not need intergalactic heroes, Ensign." He continued with quiet venom. "What it does need is an officer who understands that his work is never done while he is on duty aboard a Federation starship." With that the XO turned and resumed his position beside the captain.
Where did he come from? Thought the bearded bridge officer. Guy's like a cat. Reluctantly, Stephen began calibrations and rechecks, wishing something, anything would happen and give Talbert someone else to focus on. _________________

"Aye Sir" she said as her fingers deftly flew on her console balancing out the readings and checking that the modifications were working accordingly.
at least the engineering crew was willing to help... she thought to herself and prayed that their combined minds had successfully implemented the correct mods.
She fought a smile as she heard Daniels get verbally smacked. Having been in that sort of place before, she didn't have the heart to let him stew in his own embarssement.
"I am reading Quantums at normal levels Commander." she said confidently behind the frantic beating of her heart that the readings would stay that way.
between the mods and concerns over Lenara... I'm gonna need a drink... she thought to herself. _________________

Lt. Taarak
USS Guardian
Bridge
Taarak relaxed ever so slightly in his chair at the flight console as he watched through the view screen and glanced at his console as the USS Guardian moved into the nebula ahead of them. The Orion swiveled his head slightly, just enough to get a glimpse of the rest of the bridge crew. The captain sitting at his chair, Vanquaax working her station, searching for anything out of the ordinary.
"Wouldn't mind getting to know her" Taarak thought as he smirked slightly.
Taarak quickly turned back to his console as Talbert snapped at Ensign Daniel's remark, this time trying to hold back a laugh.
"Scared him, commander, nice job." Taarak thought to himself, looking back down at his console to make sure everything was running smoothly.
Taarak thought back his days test piloting small craft at the Utopia Planitia Yards. All the barrel rolls he used to do, all the loop-de-loops.
"Wonder what the captain would do if I barrel rolled his ship right now." Taarak looked down at his console, fingers in position to perform such a maneuver, then stopped.
"Not a good idea, Taarak, I need a fresh start here. No trouble." Taarak said to himself silently.
The Orion slowly moved his fingers away from the sequence that would roll the ship and looks back up as the ship moved into the Nebula. _________________

"I am reading Quantums at normal levels Commander."
Talbert dipped his head in recognition of the status report. "Thank you Lieutenant." He replied. Turning to the captain he said: "Torpedoes online sir, and we are right on with the discussed program requirements." He glanced to Lenara as he spoke, but left that part unsaid, knowing the captain would of course put it all together. _________________

ACTION
For three days the Guardian and her crew travel through the nebula at impulse with little excitement. The impulse engines are running hot, but so far have been stable. The reports of people avoiding the nebula appeared to be true as there was no sign of anyone else braving the volatile gases of the nebula. At this point we are about midway through Alpha shift.
Lenara verifies her readings, then speaks, "Captain, the forward probe is clearing the nebula, sensors are detecting a large debris field." She pauses, her fingers flying over the console, "The trace elements detected in the debris are consistent with Borg technology."
Marek stands, approaching the viewscreen, "How long before the ship clears the nebula?"
Lenara taps the console, "At present speed it will be eight minutes, 12 seconds to clear the nebula." _________________

Talbert stood and moved over to the Ops station, looking over Lenara's shoulder at the information streaming in. It worried him. "Yellow Alert," he called to Vanquaax then he turned to the captain.
"Sir, I concur with Lenara's assessment; that is a Borg signature, all right. I recommend caution until we determine the age and extent of the debris in question." _________________

Marek glances at Talbert, then back at the viewscreen. "Agreed. Raise shields, ready phasers. Mr. Taarak, be prepared for evasive maneuvers." He stands next to Talbert, looking down at Lenara at the Ops station. "Any sign of the station?"
Lenara's fingers move over the controls, making adjustments, "The debris field is causing interference with the probes sensors, attempting to compensate." She works the controls for ten or fifteen seconds, "I am picking up multiple energy signatures, but the data is contradictory at this time. Any identification will have to wait until the probe clears the debris." _________________

When Mehv hears the command to raise shields, his stress level rises a little. They ran simulations on how the subspace shielding would react to the increased system stress caused by the nebular gases, but had so far not actually raised shields inside the nebula.
As the shields come online, he carefully monitored the systems to ensure the energy flow stabilized and the field didn't do anything crazy like invert. His fears proved to be unfounded as the system seemed to work flawlessly. _________________
