Hearing the turbolift doors open was par for the course while on the bridge, but this time it was followed with the swift footsteps of the Captain on a direct course for his ready room.
"Commander Talbert, Lieutenant VanQuax, if you will follow me please."
Hearing the Captain's words she came to attention immediately and saw her relief heading towards her out of her perifiral vision. Falling in step a foot behind the Captian, she followed him into the ready room along with Commander Talbert. _________________

Talbert didn't liike this. No word from the shuttlebay officially, but Commander Roekil hadn't come to the bridge with the captain, nor had he inquired about the tactical station. Judging from his CO's look, this was not going to be pleasant. He steeled himself for another round of bad news. _________________

Marek clasped his hands in front of him on the table as the two officers sit. Outwardly he appeared more Vulcan than he had ever before to the two officers, but inwardly a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions fought against his control. It was sheer willpower that kept him from screaming or something worse. He looked from the pale face of VanQuax to Talbert's more tan visage.
"While on the planet's surface, there was a cave-in. Commander Roekil fell over 300 meters. Due to the electromagnetic interference, geological structure of the cavern, and sheer mass of Commander Roekil, we were unable to recover the body." Marek paused, looking into VanQuax's catlike pupils, "Lieutenant, while I have some concerns that you are not ready for this assignment, the needs of this crew forces me to make a difficult decision. Lieutenant, will you accept the post of Chief of Security/Tactical Officer?" _________________

Standing so still she could be mistaken for a statue she felt her breath leave her body and had to give her mind a moment to process what was being said.
"Lieutenant, while I have some concerns that you are not ready for this assignment, the needs of this crew forces me to make a difficult decision. Lieutenant, will you accept the post of Chief of Security/Tactical Officer?"
when she realized she felt faint, she willed her lungs to work again and blinked a time or two in an attempt to process what was happening. Swallowing audibly she opened her mouth to speak.
"I-" she started and felt her voice leave her. "I would be honored Sir." she said and felt pride for the first time in years. well shite ayns... guess this means ya gotta shape up... she thought to herself and was sure that her pale skin held a bit more blue tone than normal as she felt her blood rush a little faster. _________________

Talbert looked at the captain then to Vanquax, then back to the captain. "Sir, are you saying that Roekil is just...gone?" He found it difficult to digest, particularly in light of his own promotion. Did everyone on the ship need to die in order for advancement?
As the captain nodded he looked at Vanquax. "I saw you developing Lieutenant, but this will be a huge leap. You will have dozens of men and women at your command, but you will also have their lives in your hands. That teamwork I spoke to you about is all that is going to serve them now. Do you understand that?" _________________

Looking at Talbert with a flat expression, one that showed no emotion she paused a moment before speaking.
"I understand, and wish to convey my thoughts on that matter as well. I had... difficulty... adjusting after my transfer to this ship. Given that the Captain has enough faith in me to even offer me this" she looked between Talbert and the Captain "I feel you will see an entirely new standard by which I hold myself. I wont let you down Sir" she said and looked back to Talbert. "Either of you."
Knowing that her time of self-punishment for her own stupidity in her past was over. She felt happy to be able to prove herself again... granted she had to start over with showing the type of officer she could be... but she would make sure that she lived up to the standards of those that had served before her. She let just a hint of a smile play at her lips as thoughts of a celebratory drink ran through her head. _________________

Marek watched, his face betraying nothing.
"I expect nothing less Lieutenant." He pauses briefly, "Dismissed." He waits for VanQuax to leave, then addresses Talbert. "Keep an eye on her, I was harder on her because I have observed she performs better under pressure. I want you to make sure I am not putting too much pressure on her." He turns away, looking out of the view port at the particles streaking through the ship's warp field. _________________

Talbert nodded. "I've taken the liberty of preparing a report for you, and I'll leave it here for you. I'm very sorry sir, it seems we've had our share of tragedy of late, let's hope for a better streak soon."
He turned to walk out the door, pausing as he did.
"Captain, is there anything I can do?" He asked, knowing immediately that there was not, but feeling compelled to offer out of professionalism and friendship. Marek wasn't the typical vulcan and Roger found himself forming the seeds of comaraderie with him. He felt bad that a relatively young captain had to endure such hits so early in his career but then, the war gave all of them a taste of tragedy. _________________

Marek turned to Talbert, seeming about to say something, then turned back to the viewport. "I believe I will meditate for a while, thank you for your concern, Commander." _________________

Nodding at the Captain's dismissal, she turned and left the room allowing the doors to close behind her. gathering her composure she felt a thrill of joy run through her as she walked back to her station. Nodding as the officer left and she resumed her station. best not botch this one up she thought to herself as she fell back into the routine of her duty. _________________

Talbert returned to the bridge. The trip was coming to an end as the Panthenael system loomed in the sensors and the news just delivered was sitting heavy in his chest. Vanquax was back at her station, and he took a moment to gather himself before going around the bridge to her station.
"Congratulations, Lieutenant. I know you will do a good job. I suggest that when we get to Panthenael IV, you take the opportunity to familiarize yourself with your teams and let them do the same with you. I'll do what I can to support your new role." _________________

"Mr. Daniels, please hail the Starchild." Ordered the first officer.
"Aye, sir," was the immediate response. A moment later the screen jumped to life and Captain Saia smiled at the Guardian crew.
"Captain we'll leave you to your own devices, we've been cleared to orbit and will be travelling to the surface shortly. It was our pleasure to assist you. Fare well."
"Helm, standard orbit. Lt. Vanquax, please escort Lenara, Mr. Daniels, Mehvra Kuplo, Professor Dorin and Ensign Tanaka to the transporter room. He looked to Mr. Kuplo, please make sure you have the trade items in hand. I'll join you shortly."
As the team responds and begins filing out, Talbert sits in the command chair and records the events for Captain Marek. Talbert understood grieving, even if he didn't fully understand a vulcan, and he knew Marek was deep in meditation.
When the report was finished, he turned to the bridge watch officer. "Make sure Captain Marek receives this when he emerges." He ordered. He moved to the transporter room and whatever awaited them on Panthenael IV. _________________

OOC sorry folks, busy weekend
ACTION
The away team assembles on the transport pad, and within moments is transported to the surface. The spaceport is alive with people, sound, colors, and smells. From the Hartington's reports, the team knows approximately where to go, but before they can do more than look around, a Myosian man approaches, flanked by two larger Myosians that where obviously some kind of security detail.
The Myosian man approaches Talbert, his gruff voice carrying easily over the noise of the crowd.
"Are you Commander Talbert of the Federation Starship Guardian?" _________________

Panthanel IV - Space Dock Main Annex
Lt Mehvra-Kuplo
Mehv had the trade supplies beamed down to the surface next to them. A couple of crates with anti-grav units for easy transport.
After he materialized, he moved over to the equipment to ensure that nothing had been damaged in the transport. There was a couple of delicate instruments that had a knack for being scrambled in the pattern buffers.
At the approach of the Myosians, he looks up at the man speaking and notices the guards. A little perplexed, he wonders if there was a problem, or if the security was for us or the man who spoke. The reports were that the Myosians had been very fair trading partners with the Hartington. Very strange, he thought. _________________
